Chine : stupeur et tremblements

Plus que raconter un pays, c’est un premier regard en mouvement - forcément superficiel – que je pose après quinze jours de voyage entre Pékin, Pingyao, Xi’an, Yangshuo et Shanghai.

Naïvement, je m’attendais à quelque chose de « communiste » : la faucille et le marteau ici et là, discrets comme le minuscule “pin’s” du facteur, quelques maisonnettes avec le portrait de Mao.

Une touriste demande : « En quoi croyez-vous ? » Le guide répond : « En nous-mêmes. » Ils sont forts, me dis-je.

Dans un temple, même question : « Dans l’argent. » Et elle rit, les prières vont à l’essentiel : travail, concours, argent. J’observe le Bouddha, bien enrobé, il rit, plein des billets sur ces jambes croisées.

Hors des temples : néons, marchandises, gadgets, nourriture partout, en abondance. Et des gens.

Des villes scénographiques aux lumières scintillantes, à la limite du kitsch : de véritables Las Vegas orientales. Les Chinois sortent, visitent, adorent le karaoké, adorent s’amuser.

Puis les voitures de luxe. Les marques occidentales. Shanghai : plus de Starbucks qu’à New York.

Consumunisme ? Deuxième pays au monde pour le nombre de milliardaires, entre consumérisme et communisme.

Mais la richesse individuelle ne doit pas trop s’afficher : trop, c’est trop, et sur les réseaux chinois, qui exagère est banni. Il faut progresser - ou le faire croire ? - tous ensemble.

J’arpente les villes. Trottoirs propres. Rues silencieuses. Voitures et scooters électriques qui avancent sans bruit.

Places vivantes : personnes âgées — et pas seulement — dansent, jouent, font de la gymnastique.

Espaces publics sûrs et rassurants. Courtoisie partout. Qualité de vie au top.

Le revers de la médaille : tout le monde sur son téléphone. Couples d’amoureux et familles au restaurant, penchés sur l’écran, chacun dans sa bulle.

On paie partout avec des QR codes. Zéro (virgule zéro un) liquide. La technologie rend tout fluide : de Pékin à Shanghai — métro, trains, avions, restaurants — tout se réserve et se paie au son d’un bip et d’une petite voix métallique que la transaction a été effectuée.

J’approche mon téléphone du QR code d’un mendiant. Des robots font le room service. Univers technologique.

Quoi qu’il en soit, la Chine est un de ces pays qui vous laissent bouche bée (au sens propre aussi… j’ai pris 3 kilos au passage). On repart avec l’envie d’y retourner. Tout de suite.

Comme au Brésil — où je me suis installé — et à Cuba : des cultures et des gens qui vous envoutent et ne vous quittent plus.

Et puis, les murailles (la grande et les “petites”), les palais, les pagodes, la Cité interdite, l’armée de terre cuite… Tant d’histoire, tant de culture. Et des paysages à couper le souffle.

Des temples colorés où les fidèles glissent d’un autel à l’autre pour accomplir des rites - parfois un peu express…

La tradition explose aussi visuellement : des jeunes femmes en somptueux costumes traversent les villes. Héritage profond ou présent éphémère fait de poses pour Douyin et Red Note, les réseaux sociaux locaux ? La vérité entre les deux ?

Au final, la Chine — qui contrôle, planifie, détruit et reconstruit — semble se projeter vers l’avenir avec des valeurs solides, où la cohésion sociale compte plus que la liberté.

Un contraste fort avec nos nations, souvent figées et de plus en plus fragmentées.

Éloge de la Chine ? Pas exactement. Je cherche liberté ET cohésion. J’en demande trop ?

Le géant asiatique est une invitation à regarder ailleurs et à apprendre.

J’oubliais : le titre ? En pensant à la Chine, impossible de ne pas penser au roman ironique d’Amélie Nothomb sur le Japon : Stupeur et tremblements. C’est un peu ma première impression.
